Research

Mann Cottage Surgery is a ‘Research Ready Accredited Practice’ and we are a single site research practice since April 2024. We participate in a variety of research studies that have been approved by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). This means we are working to find ways of improving the care we provide and help to inform future developments in health care.

At some point you may be invited to participate in a study, either by a letter through the post or during an appointment at the surgery. All clinical research we participate in is thoroughly checked and approved by ethical committees to ensure that it is appropriate and safe to perform. You will always receive clear information about what taking part in a research study would involve. Your participation is entirely voluntary and can be withdrawn at any time. You are under no obligation to participate in any research project and your care will not be affected in any way if you decided not to take part.

Current studies we are participating in

Virology Swabbing (ongoing)

If you phone or visit the surgery and have symptoms of an upper respiratory illness we may ask if we can send you a text message with a link to request a nose/throat swab. If you do request a swab and return it to the research team it will help us to monitor the spread of respiratory illness in our community such as COVID, RSV and Flu. Optimise2

We are currently (Feb 2025) recruiting for this study. This trial will establish whether deprescribing common drugs that lower blood pressure is safe or effective in older people in the longer term (a year or more).

Previous studies our patients have participated in

Safer

The aim of this trial is to determine if screening for Atrial Fibrillation in people aged 70 and over leads to reduced incidence of stroke compared to usual care and what impact it has on outcomes.

Active brains

This study compares a new website designed to help older adults look after their brain and body health with the aim of preventing cognitive decline. The website will help older adults make simple changes such as getting more active, playing brain training games and finding ways to eat more healthily.

HIPDYS

This study is an evaluation of aid to diagnosis for congenital dysplasia of the hip in general practice. This will be for babies having their 6-8 week. All parents/guardians will have the option to opt out of this study if they wish.

Multicath

Multicath aims to find out whether using a mixture of re-usable catheters and single use catheters is as safe and acceptable for intermittent catheterisation as using single-use catheters alone.
